In answer to your background colour question (I posted this in comments on my blog too):
I change the background colour possibly the most long-winded, inefficient way ever. I googled HTML colours so I could get the right six digit code (try http://html-color-codes.com/). Then I just pasted the code of the colour I wanted in the template. I've personalised the background, text, and links as well. You can go to anyone's webpage, right click anywhere and go to "view source." That has the HTML instructions for the whole page (that's partly how I changed the banner - I copied the instructions on your page). Good luck.
